Dick Bruna was born in Utrecht, the Nethrerlands, in 1927.
From a young age he liked reading, drawing and making things by himself.
His father had always wanted him to take over his publishing company some day.
So after World War �U Dick was sent to Paris to learn the business.
In his free time he practiced drawing and visited many art galleries.
He was deeply impressed by the works of Picasso and Matisse.
Above all, Matisse is works had a great influence on him.
They were simple and vivid and appealed to him directly.
Before long, Dick realized that he was not cut out for business.
For him, nothing was more important than drawing.
He told his father he wanted to be an artist rather than a businessman.
